Next test of patience – Toll Point St. Michael will be a construction site

Date:

St. Michael will be a hub during the construction work: in 2026 the conversion of the toilet station will start. Also comes an extra trace of the climb and departure to the village. After that, renovation work in Tauern and Katschbergtunnel will start six years.

The traffic flows every minute: motorists pay 14.50 euros for Tauern and Katschbergtunnel. From “real employees” to machines and video cars, everything is offered in the tolcabines. Drivers from all over the world brake here and let the windows down.

In 1975 the company started at that time at the only toilet office of the Tauern highway in St. Michael with a tunnel tube through Katschberg and Tauern. 12 employees were employed. In the meantime, there are more than twice as much. There are also ferial forces in the summer. 7.6 million vehicles rattle the lanes of the Tauern highway every year and pay here.

Years of the construction site in Lungau with Start 2026
While the end of the excessive construction phase is approaching the tunnel chain after two years with massive effects in the adjacent communities, another patience test is already inevitable.

The following building plans have an influence on Lungau. The pre -talks have been on the measures for months. The renovation of the St. Michael toilet station, including the descendants and entrances in Zederhaus and St. Michael, starts next year. Everything is taken to the latest technical status. “The company is hardly affected by the new building,” promises an Asfinag spokesperson.

For the construction phase, a temporary toll system has been set up near the tracks and technical systems that are dismantled. The new toll cabins will be healthy and heat insulated. More space is also planned, ie an upgrade of the jobs. It is built with a lot of wood. Energy flows from a photovoltaic system.

Extra rail for departure and driveway in place
The connection with the city for the head -handed point is also upgraded. There is an extra third number. “This is an urgent wish of the communities,” said Mayor Manfred Sampl (ÖVP). Because Lungauer also expected a longer travel time to Salzburg during the construction phase. The connection with Zederhaus has also been adjusted. After the conversion of the toll point, the renovation work of Tauern and Katschbergt tunnel will start in the fall 2027, which will last six years.
