Travelers have to expect enormous delays this summer. Airport operators mainly have a problem with it: an acute shortage of staff.
The Vida Union warned again on Sunday for flight delays and cancellations in the summer months. The reason is in the increasing number of journeys for many years, while there are more and more bottlenecks of staff. More than 1,000 air traffic controllers are already missing throughout Europe.
In addition to Germany and Hungary, the most important things are also the holiday countries in Greece and Türkiye. In the meantime, the problem has also arrived in Brussels. EU transport commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas currently warns problems in July and August.
Corona -MIERBUIT is a boomerang
Last summer there were 35,000 daily flights in Europe at the top, this year to 38,000 are expected. The problem: in many states, staff dismantled during the Corona period and the associated travel restrictions – who now seem to be missing.
In principle, the task of the air traffic controller is paid above the average, because the responsibility is also extremely high. Accordingly, the training is complex and it takes a long time.
Partly all -clear for Austria
For Austria, the responsible Austrian control gives partly the All -Clear: “We started a training offensive during the Pandemie, which we are now going on. In 2024 we had 1300 applications – a record. We were therefore very well positioned,” said spokesperson Markus Pohanka. The trade union calls for new legal framework conditions of the EU committee and a deviation from the austerity measures.
