Only 37 percent of the wheel, 55 percent of the e-bike and twelve percent of e-scooter travelers wear a helmet to protect themselves. For users of rental scooters, the helmet step ratio is de facto at zero.
The survey was conducted in March and April 2025 in the Austrian state capitals at locations of inner -city daily bicycle traffic and on routes of tourist and leisure bicycle traffic.
14,856 people were observed by the ÖAMTC-13,621 cyclists (11,265 with conventional bicycles, 2356 with e-bikes) and 1235 e-scooter travelers.
Differences in capitals of the state
There were also major differences in a regional comparison: the highest was the helmet trag ratio of bicycles in Linz (62 percent) for Vienna (51 percent) and Bregenz (47 percent). Salzburg (43 percent) and Graz (41 percent) arranged in midfield. The helmet traitage of bicycles in Eisenstadt (30 percent), Innsbruck (21 percent), Klagenfurt (20 percent) and St. Pölten (16 percent) was considerably lower.
The fact that the use of helmets is also different for age groups is clearly visible in the accident statistics for 2023: the group of an accident of a 15 to 24-year-old bicycle ranges has the least Helmet Spoorquotum of all age groups, followed by Senior: within 85 years (35 percent). The group of 55 to 74-year-olds most often wore a helmet with 55 percent.

In general, the number of accidents with personal losses with the participation of bicycles and e-bike travel has risen by 42 percent in the last ten years.
