In Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevana, famous for its ancient giant sequoias, a wildfire is currently threatening the ancient trees. According to local authorities, the fire has spread to the southern edge of the national park in the popular tour area.

The “Washburn” fire has now grown to an area of ​​188 hectares, it is said. The Mariposa Forest, the largest forest of giant sequoias with several hundred mature specimens in the southern part of the national park, is therefore closed to visitors.

Several hundred people in the nearby village of Wawona and at a campsite have been asked to leave the vulnerable area. The cause of the devastating fire is not yet known.
