The spring season started on the highest mountain in the world. Eight Nepalese mountain climbers reached the top of Mount Everest and opened the route for hundreds. The authorities of Nepal have already granted 456 permits from April to the beginning of June.
“The route was opened a little earlier,” said the mountain climber Purnima Shrestha in the Everest -Basis camp. “Hopefully it helps to better handle the number of climbers and to reduce traffic.” In the past, the authorities of Nepal were repeatedly criticized to suddenly leave too many people on Mount Everest and not to take care of the state of the mountain.
At least four of the eleven deaths in the previous year were attributed to overcrowding. In 2019, a traffic jam on the Everest route offered hours of different teams in freezing temperatures.
Important source of income for the country
In Nepal there are eight of the ten highest peaks in the world. Since the first climb of the 8849 meter High Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953, foreign climbers have been an important source of income for the country. In the previous year, more than 800 people paid the rise costs, which is the equivalent of more than 13,200 euros.
