Dispute about oil fields – Fight Against Shell: Climate Protection Officers again

Date:

It goes to the next round: Dutch climate protection officers start a new process against Shell. The organization of Milieudefensia now wants to fight for the company that the group is no longer allowed to develop new oil and gas fields.

“We demand that Shell immediately stops developing new oil and gas fields,” says the director of the organization, Donald Pols, in Amsterdam. The promotion of fossil energies from new fields would have catastrophic consequences for the climate, warns wrist.

In a first process, the climate protection officers had called for an extensive reduction in CO2 emissions and initially also achieved a historical victory in The Hague: but it was withdrawn into the appointment in 2024.

Focus on new gas and oil fields
Now the claimants focus on new gas and oil fields and refer to the judges in the appeal procedure. They had explained that Shell had a special responsibility for climate protection and that investments in new fields could possibly violate this.

The group has not yet responded to the new procedure. After the victory in the appeal procedure, Shell was confident. “We are convinced that we will also get rights from the Supreme Court,” said the Dutch Shell boss Frans Everts.

Historical judgment
In 2021, the civil judges initially committed themselves to an extensive CO2 reduction-it also treated indirect emissions, that is, those of suppliers and customers. But in the profession the judges said that this could not be done. In February the climate protection officers were the highest copy for the Supreme Court. When an opinion will take place is unclear.

The lawsuit was submitted in the Netherlands because Shell also had a place in The Hague at the time of the court case. The climate process had attracted attention worldwide.
