Day 40 in Russia’s war against Ukraine: These are the most important developments of the day.

The most important of April 4 in a nutshell:

  • The UN has documented the deaths of 1,417 civilians in Ukraine since Russian forces invaded. Among them were 121 children and young people, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent a video message to the US Grammy Awards ceremony asking for support for his country.

  • After the massacre in Bucha, a suburb of Kiev, Russia must prepare for a tightening of western sanctions, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Sunday evening.

  • Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) meets Ukrainian refugee women in Moldova. “We cry when the children sleep,” says a mother of “Krone”.
