A tragic crocodile attack is currently shaken by the Indonesian island of Sumatra: the victim can only be found dead from a channel.
Indonesia keeps track of the world record for Crocodilatos: between 2015 and 2024, according to the Crocattack organization, 1167 people were attacked by the reptiles. Most conflicts are available with the inguinal crocodile (crocodyylus porosus), also called salt -water crocodile. The species is the largest and most dangerous crocodile type and spread throughout Southeast Asia and Australia.
On Wednesday, the body of the 45-year-old man was found about 200 meters from the point where he was last seen, such as the search and rescue service in Bazaaras announced. The man was attacked by the reptile when he swam with a friend on Tuesday in the morning through the canal in the Pasaman Barat district.
Apparently the man had no chance: the crocodile pulled him under water, it said. The friend still tried to grab him on her arm – but in vain. “During the search we used three teams with inflatable boats, drones with thermal sensors and coastal patrilles,” said Malik. Underwater location devices were also used.
What do palm oil plantations have to do with it?
The channel leads through a plantation that is managed by a palm oil company. In the region, such palm oil plantations have spread rapidly over the past two decades due to the global demand for vegetable raw material – often at the expense of natural river systems and wooded wetlands.
The construction of channels for plantations and other changes in waterways have created new habitats. The result: the number of crocodiles in populated areas has grown dramatically – with often fatal consequences.
