After several explosions, a fire broke out in a park in Rome on Saturday afternoon. The flames quickly spread from the high winds and a thick plume of black smoke could be seen over much of the Italian capital. 100 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the blaze.
This was done with the help of 50 vehicles, but also from the air. Firefighting planes have taken off from Rome’s Ciampino Airport. The high winds caused the flames to spread like lightning, a thick cloud of black smoke could be seen from the grounds of the Circus Maximus, where 70,000 people attended a concert by the rock group Maneskin.
Residents left apartments
The authorities advised residents of the affected area to wear face masks on the street. People in four buildings had to leave their homes, the fire service reported.
Four big fires in one month
Rome has already had four serious fires within a month. A representative of the Democratic Party (PD) suspects arson. “It is now clear that Rome is under attack by arsonists. Investigators will tell us whether it is outsiders or organized crime,” said Claudio Mancini.
His colleague Roberto Morassut, on the other hand, suspects ‘ecological terrorism’ as a result of the waste problem. People could have set their garbage on fire. The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, wants to control the waste problem that has existed for years by building a waste incineration plant. The installation is intended to reduce the need for landfills, but is unlikely to be completed before 2025.
