Japan’s upper house elections on Sunday revealed a victory for the government camp of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida (pictured above). His Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and his younger partner Komeito are likely to win their previous majority in the lower house of parliament, media reported based on voter surveys after polls closed.
The election took place in the wake of the assassination attempt on former LDP party and government leader Shinzo Abe. He was gunned down in the street Friday while speaking to the election campaign and was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The election campaign was initially interrupted but resumed on Saturday under heightened security measures. Kishida refused to postpone the elections.
Every three years, half of the 248 seats in the upper house are up for grabs. The coalition also has a majority in the more powerful lower house.
