Sefcovic has defended that the measure responds to the “enormous flood” of packages that “pose a new challenge for control, safety” and the task to ensure that all these products meet European standards.
The European Commission is planning one 2 euro rate to small packages That they usually come from China via digital platforms such as Temu or Shein. The announcement was made by the European Commerce Commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, during a appearance for the internal market committee and the protection of consumers of the European Parliament.
Sefcovic has emphasized that it is not a new “tax”, but a rate to “compensate” the costs of managing the enormous amount of packages that the customs authorities must manage.
He has detailed that it is “two euros per package that is paid by the platform. And if it is for services offered by the stores in which these packages are stored, it is even less, of 0.50 euros.”
Brussels has therefore set a figure for an initiative that has already been claimed in a document that will be presented in February of this year. In the same, the Executive Community indicated that 91 % of all packages which arrived at the EU via electronic platforms and that had a value of less than 150 euros They came from China. The volume is bent compared to the previous year to reach 4,170 million products.
This increase in packages “coincides with the extremely rapid growth of certain purchase platforms” and specifically mentioned the “exponential increase” of Temu and Shein.
Despite this data, Sefcovic has assured that Brussels has designed its proposal so that it is not ‘discriminatory’. This new rate will be collected by the customs authorities and be transferred to the community budget.
