A cow in the cesspool or a dog in the fence: not only lives are saved by the fire brigade. “You can see from our names that we are particularly animal-loving in Amstetten”, the district fire command jokes about the “animal” surnames in command.
Rudolf Katzengruber is in charge of the district fire brigade command, his deputy is called Josef Fuchsberger. One becomes much more serious when one thinks back to the most recent operations in the district, which required the full commitment of the comrades. For example, cow “Elmira” had to be rescued from a cesspool. She had fallen ten feet through a hole. The situation of the dog “Mischa”, who tried to slip through a fence, but got stuck between the bars, was also unfortunate. Particularly memorable were a pony that had to be rescued from a stream and a pregnant cat that did not fit through the tilted window and threatened to suffocate.
“It’s not funny…”
The Florianis have to go out several times a month to rescue animals. Most are successful, which is anything but self-evident. It is often only possible with a lot of skill and a wealth of ideas to free the animals from their predicament. “And it’s anything but funny to rescue a collapsed cow from a manure pit,” emphasizes one firefighter. The gratitude of the animal owners usually makes the hardships quickly forgotten
