North Korea fires more missiles on last day of US-South Korea exercises

Date:

Washington and Seoul fear the barrage of gunfire will culminate in a nuclear test for the first time since 2017

North Korea fired four short-range ballistic missiles on Saturday, in new launches adding to the long series conducted this week, coinciding with the final day of the largest air maneuvers staged by South Korea and the United States. These two countries fear this barrage of gunfire will culminate in a nuclear test, the first since 2017.

The South Korean military discovered the launch today “from Tongrim, in the province of North Pyongang, to the Western Sea between 11:32 a.m. and 11:59 a.m.,” the joint chiefs of staff said in a statement, using a different name to get to the Yellow Sea. refer. North Korea launched about 30 ballistic missiles this week. One of them fell in South Korea’s territorial waters.

The European Union has “firmly” condemned the launch of these new North Korean missiles and called for a “united response” to these acts. “North Korea’s actions require a united and determined response from the international community,” EU diplomat Josep Borrell said in a statement.

Washington and Seoul decided yesterday to extend by one day some of the joint military exercises called “Storm Vigilante” that began Monday. A US B-1B strategic bomber took part in air exercises yesterday, marking the first flight of such an aircraft over the Korean peninsula since December 2017.

Experts point out that the communist regime led by Kim Jong Un is especially annoyed by these maneuvers, the largest ever carried out by Seoul and Washington, with hundreds of planes on either side.

Experts say Pyongyang is particularly sensitive to these military operations, as the air force is one of the military’s weaknesses, lacking high-tech fighter jets and well-trained pilots.
