Tuberculosis business – 400 pills a day for sick elephants in Pakistan

Date:

Two elephants who members of tuberculosis are administered every day in Pakistan at least 400 tablets, which are actually intended for the treatment of human patients. The Zookeepers in the Karachi animal garden hide the pills in apples, bananas and sweets.

In Pakistan, veterinarians test a new treatment method for elephants suffering from tuberculosis. However, this appears to be very complex. Apart from the permanent necessary administration, which also requires some creativity, it has only an effect in weeks.

Two elephants in zoo
“Madhubala” and “Malika” were tested positively for tuberculosis after two other African elephants “Sonia” and “Noor Jehan” died of the disease in the zoo. Initially the animal patients spit out the drug again, it is said. But creative opportunities have been found to hide the tablets in the feed.

Animal holders must wear masks
“Treating elephants with tuberculosis is always a challenge,” said the vet Buddhika Bandara, who traveled from Sri Lanka to check the care. The Zookeepers wear masks and jackets when feeding the elephants not to infect themselves.

Infectious disease tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that usually influence the lungs and is still widespread in people in Pakistan.
