Urkullu bets on a hydrogen ecosystem as a “first-order investment” for decarbonization

The Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, this Friday chose the creation of a hydrogen ecosystem as a “first order investment in the Basque Country” that will enable progress in the decarbonisation of the energy, industrial, services and mobility sectors. “We are an industrial area and we take responsibility to contribute to restoring the planet’s balance and neutrality of greenhouse gas emissions in the 2050 horizon,” he said.

Urkullu has spoken in Bilbao at the Renewable Hydrogen: Future of Energy conference, organized by UGT-FIA, in which he emphasized the existence of two realities: the central role of energy in the future, both from the point of view of well-being and industrial development; and the belief that the energy-environmental transformation is a country challenge, requiring a shared strategy and the cooperation of all actors.

In this sense, he believes that the UGT’s commitment, in conducting this conference, “reveals the interest that the reflection on a transformation that will affect both companies and workers deeply in the union field arouses”.

After pointing out that the Basque Country is a community committed to the sustainable development model, he recalled that it has adopted the international climate goals. For example, in 2015 it took part in COP 21 and the Basque government adopted the “Paris accords”. Already in 2019, it approved the “Climate Emergency Declaration” and the Energy Sustainability Law.

He also emphasized that the government’s 2020 program includes a commitment to “commit firmly to reaching a broad societal agreement on climate”. Last year it approved the “Basque Green Deal” in accordance with the “European Green Pact”. Likewise, the green light has been given to the law on environmental management and the conservation of natural heritage, as well as the draft law on energy transition and climate change.

The Basque Country also has, as you noted, the Energy Transition and Climate Change Plan, and the Circular Economy and Bioeconomy Plan; a strategy that binds public institutions, economic and social actors.

sustainable human development

De Lehendakari has emphasized that the Basque model is that of sustainable human development, and is the basis of its “connection with the land”. “We are an industrial area and we take responsibility for contributing to restoring the planet’s balance and neutrality of greenhouse gas emissions in the 2050 horizon,” he added.

Iñigo Urkullu has emphasized that this target is shared in the Industrial Cluster, contributing to the “net zero emissions” target. “Creating a hydrogen ecosystem is a first-class investment in the Basque Country. It will allow us to make progress in decarbonisation of the energy, industry, services and mobility sectors,” he emphasized.

Moreover, he explained that “it opens the door to new opportunities in industry and technology”. According to him, this meeting organized by UGT-FICA allows “knowing different realities” such as “the green hydrogen roadmap, the progress in the experiences of Canada, Australia or the United States”.

Also today, the use of hydrogen in new mobility will be studied in depth, as well as the experiences of the Basque hydrogen corridor or that of Norway, Japan or Germany. “The international dimension of these projects is fundamental. We are talking about a global challenge. Hydrogen currently represents less than 2% of energy consumption in Europe and is mainly used for the production of chemical products such as plastics and fertilizers,” he says. stated.

Urkullu has emphasized that 96% of this hydrogen is produced by gas, which means a large amount of CO2 emissions. For this reason, the European Union’s strategy examines the potential of hydrogen to assist “efficiently” in decarbonisation. With this objective, it will allocate one billion euros to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership initiative in the period 2021-2027; supplemented by at least the same amount of private investment.

For Urkullu this is “a first-level objective” and he stressed that in the past two months he has had the opportunity to increase the hydrogen corridor as a priority under the European Commission for the Atlantic Arc; participate in the start-up of the investment in the Port of Bilbao decarbonisation hub, with the participation of Repsol and Petronor; and learn about ongoing research and development experiences in Corsica.

Likewise, he stressed that this Friday he is presenting an initiative in the Pyrenees Working Committee, with the creation of a working group that takes into account the entire value chain: production, storage, distribution, use, safety standards and training.

“We have a model of energy efficiency, investment in renewable energy and industrial development that looks to the future. Our country’s goal is to undertake a just energy and environmental transition that allows us to combine industry and sustainability. bring,” he emphasized.
