A woman and a child died in the English canal in the attempt to come from France to Great Britain. The bodies of the two were discovered on a busy refugee boat.
According to the French authorities, 85 people were on board the boat. A ship from the French navy had responded to the refugee boat. Ten passengers asked to be returned ashore. The rest went on with the trip, said it on Wednesday.
Kill in ten days in the English canal
This increases the number of fatalities in the English channel to five within ten days. Since the beginning of the year, at least 15 people have died in attempted channel transitions. Last year there were 78 fatalities, a maximum number since 2018.
According to a count of the AFP press office based on information from the British Ministry of the Interior, this year at least 12,500 migrants illegally crossed the English channel.
London has been fighting illegal access for years
London has been trying for years to prevent migrants from entering the English channel – among other things due to harder action against tractor gangs and closer cooperation with the French authorities. Migration to Great Britain was an important topic in the 2024 election campaign, which yielded countless voices for anti -immigration, right -wing populist reform UK.
Many migrants want to continue from France to Great Britain because they already have family members or friends, speak the language and hope to be able to build a new life there.
