Climate activists blocked the highway exit to Schüttelstrasse in Vienna-Leopoldstadt around 8.30 am on Monday. In a broadcast, the latest generation of AT called for “an end to fossil destruction and the transition to a survival economy”.
Police spokesman Markus Dittrich confirmed an operation near the stadium bridge. Numerous witnesses had previously come forward. There was already a traffic jam and attempts were made to divert traffic. There were about ten people with banners on the road.
Stuck on the street
According to the activists themselves, several participants in the action have stuck to the street. At the Erdberg interchange, exits from the Ostautobahn (A4) and the Südwesttangente (A23) lead to the center of Vienna. Dittrich announced that the police would break up the protest “with due speed and care”.
“It is unacceptable to promote fossil infrastructure instead of implementing effective austerity measures,” the climate activists said on Twitter.
