Engineers have worked out a new method to store surplus electricity: the iron storage. “Krone” science expert Christian Mähr has examined the concept in more detail.
In the beginning a short mention with regard to the term “excess”: I can’t remember that I have ever used this adjective in connection with the main word “electricity” as a science editor at ORF. There was no “surplus electricity”, that was a “contradictio in Adjecto”, that is, a contradiction – there could not be something like a round square. Because electricity was always too little. And what about the pumped memory? Yes, in this electricity that is not necessary at a certain moment, it is used to pump the water to the highlying storage lake. But this power is not “excess” – the electricity is needed!
