The bliss -this year feels like a “bathing month” because it is too cool and too wet. The greengrocers are good because the plants have no stress and the quality is very good. The asparagusers certainly want a few degrees – because the asparagus Guto grows with the heat.
“This is how climate change is optimal. Less precipitation in the winter, you can go to the field quickly and the vegetation time starts earlier, ends later,” says Stefan Hameder, spokesperson for the greengrocers in Upper Austria, but wishes that the heat is less strong in July and August. Then you get problems on the heavy soil, because half of the 2000 hectares of area have no irrigation.
“Plants have no stress”
“But it can hardly be better than this year,” says Hameder. And strawberry builder Andreas Hoffelner from Kremsmünster is of the same opinion: “Better than 30 degrees!” The strawberries would mature more slowly, but larger and sweeter because there is a change of sun, cool nights and moisture. “The plants have no stress. It is too hot, the strawberries quickly turn red, but the plants produce less fruit,” explains the expert, who expects the 70 Strawberry farmers this year on their 320 hectares. “In the previous year it was much too hot, it is quite normal this year,” said Hoffelner.
“Asparagus Gush is larger in the heat”
With the 22 farmers who produce on 134 hectares in Upper Austria, they wish them “a few more degrees”, as Stephanie Mühlberghuber of the Spargelhof in Ansfelden thinks. The quality of the Poles is very good, the tips are particularly beautiful, but the quantity is missing. This shortcoming is “balanced” by careful question. “Grilling is not a problem this year. We notice that. In good weather people have more tasto about asparagus. And there are fewer cyclists moving and take something with you,” says De Boer.
In general, however, there is one satisfied and the season goes no further than St. John this year on 24 June.
