The impending emergency in the supply of blood products could now be averted. The Red Cross announced on Monday that almost four times as many people as usual had come to donate blood in Vienna in the past two weeks.
“There were more than 20,000 blood donations across Austria,” said Red Cross president Gerald Creator. This ensures the supply for the coming weeks. The Austrian federal government has recently appealed for donations to the population. That will remain the case for the coming months, however, Creator said.
Blood products have a shelf life of only 42 days
“So if you haven’t had time yet or are going on vacation now, we’re asking you to donate blood in the coming weeks or months.” Blood preserves have a shelf life of only 42 days, so regular supplementation is important. For those who are interested, the Red Cross offers a reminder service that will send you an e-mail as soon as the crowds decrease.
