Refreshowing continues to absorb: according to a current report from the World Weather Organization (WMO), a new global temperature record will be set up in the next five years.
Currently in 2024 the year with the highest measured average temperature. For the period from 2025 to 2029, the WMO predicts at least one new record with a probability of 80 percent.
The development of global warming is alarming
The development in global warming as a whole is also disturbing. The five-year average of the temperatures is expected to be above the 1.5 degree brand-the goal that was set at the Parisian Climate Agreement 2015 to prevent the worst consequences of climate change. The Social Support Act assumes that this limit was already torn in 2024, even if it is only officially missed if the value is stored over longer periods.
The increasing temperatures already have noticeable consequences: more heat waves, stronger rainfall, drought, melting glaciers and an increase in sea level. “Unfortunately, this WMO report does not contain any signs of relaxation in the coming years,” emphasizes WMO Vice-Term Ko Barrett. “This means that our economies, our daily lives, our ecosystems and our planet are always negatively influenced.”
Amazon is becoming drier
Regional differences are also on the rise: although North Europe and South Asia have to expect more precipitation, the Amazon is expected to be dryer. The rapid warming of the North Pole area is particularly alarming, which warms up more than three times as quickly as the global average in the winter months.
To keep global warming under 1.5 degrees, according to WMO, fast and significant savings in greenhouse gas emissions require at least 43 percent by 2030 and measures to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
