Flood wave threatened – Dorp spilled: Now neighboring cities must vibrate

Date:

After the enormous abortion, which the Bergdorp blats in Valais (Switzerland) buried under a huge layer of rubbers, other houses are now in acute danger. While the first had already been evacuated, repair work in the danger area had to be put on hold. The search for a missing person was stopped …

Fear is growing: Now the next devastating bladder threatens? Due to the approaching tidal wave, different houses were already evacuated in two hamlets – 16 people had to leave their accommodations.

Now also in danger to neighboring cities
A dam a few meters high, made by the gigantic avalanche made of ice and rock, blocks the river Lonza and the Dorfbach Gisentella. Behind: a growing reservoir. If the water spends, a tidal wave can flood the valley – with devastating consequences for the lower cities.

Spokesperson Antoine Jacquod of Civil Protection warns: “There is a high risk of floods.” The situation is crucial that no rescue or clearance work in the danger area is currently possible. “When we can intervene, it is currently unclear.”

So shortly before the dramatic salvation of the pastures ran away:

The Swiss army is mobilized, drones and helicopters follow the situation from the air. As a precaution, a reservoir was emptied to make room for the water masses in an emergency.

Damm can become unstable and break
But the geologist Flavio Anselmetti warns: “The worst would be that water builds up to the crown of the Mountain Clasp -Dam.” The river could then cut into the rock mixture, become unstable and break: “Then very strong tidal waves or lengthy length of this outbreak can be for the municipalities in the lower valley,” Anselmetti explains.

While Wiler is being evacuated, blats are buried with tons of rubble. Drone Shots Show (see below): 90 percent of the village – about 130 houses, including the church – were recorded by the abortion. The Shatd layer is in places up to 200 meters thick.

Search for missing stopping
Especially tragic: a 64-year-old local is still missing. He was in the danger area despite evacuation. The search has now been stopped for safety reasons. Even a helicopter team with a sniffer dog could not find a trace of the man.

Immediate help
Aid organizations have already responded: Caritas Switzerland and the Red Cross offered more than 430,000 euros in immediate help, the sponsorship for mountain communities wants to offer more than a million euros for support.

The situation in the Lötschental remains critical. The weather conditions, the pressure on Dam Square and the speed of the water rise will decide on the fate of further villages in the coming hours …
