Party sets the pace – Prime Minister Johnson must leave as soon as possible

Date:

The British Conservatives apparently want to get rid of Prime Minister Boris Johnson as soon as possible. The election rules agreed on Monday evening only provide for a one-day candidacy period – on Tuesday. The first ballot will take place on Wednesday and the second on Thursday. The new prime minister will then be announced on September 5.

There should be as many rounds of elections as it takes to leave two candidates. These will then have to deal with a popular vote by party members. The rules of procedure were established after the election of the so-called commission of 1922, which is responsible, among other things, for the motions of no confidence against party leaders. Johnson only survived a vote of no confidence in the committee in early June, but a wave of ministerial resignations the week before forced him to throw in the towel as party leader. He wants to remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen.

Results will be announced on September 5th
As the committee has announced, the results of the presidential election will be announced on September 5 – the first day of the session after the summer break. At the same time, in order to limit the number of candidates, a high threshold for candidatures has been raised. Only those who can show at least 20 statements of support from MPs may be elected by the Tory group.

As of Monday, eleven candidates threw their hats into the ring. Recently, Secretary of State Liz Truss and Secretary of State Rehman Chishti also took part in the race. It could also not be ruled out that Interior Minister Priti Patel would submit her application.

Johnson made no recommendation for his successor. In his first public appearance after announcing his resignation on Monday, the 58-year-old declined to recommend a successor to the Conservative Tories leader and British Prime Minister.

Truss surrounds conservative base
In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Truss announced a continued tough stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin and tax cuts. “Under my leadership, I would cut taxes from day one to take immediate action to help people manage the daily cost of living,” Truss wrote. She is considered the preferred candidate of the conservative base, which makes the final decision about the party leader.

Former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak, long considered the favorite to succeed Johnson, is also running for the post. Attorney General Suella Braverman, former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, former Health and Finance Secretary Sajid Javid and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps have also announced their candidacy. Sunak’s successor, Nadhim Zahawi, promised significant tax cuts, as did Javid.

50 members of the government have resigned
Sunak and Javid are the most prominent of the more than 50 government members who resigned last week in protest against Johnson, who, despite a number of scandals and massive pressure from his own ranks, has long refused to resign. Johnson has relinquished party leadership, but wants to remain as prime minister until there is clarity about the successor – this could now be faster than initially thought.
