Last week, two serious injuries were caused by an explosion at a barbecue in the Tyrolean Unterland: during the police investigation it turned out that the use of gunpowder was the cause of the fatal incident.
Last Wednesday evening, a loud bang suddenly clouded the evening mood in Kössen (Kitzbüheler district). After a barbecue there was a violent explosion. Two men (aged 40 and 43) suffered serious injuries. A passer-by immediately alerted emergency services. After receiving first aid, the 40-year-old was flown to the accident hospital in Salzburg – his colleagues were rescued to the hospital in St. Johann in Tirol.
Demonstration with black gunpowder ends fatally
But how did the fatal explosion come about? In the course of the investigation, according to police, it appeared that the 40-year-old wanted to demonstrate the effects of black gunpowder to the other man on the terrace.
“Including he sprinkled a small amount of black powder into an ashtray that also contained cigarette butts. After the black powder initially showed no reaction, the man sprinkled more powder – and then the explosion happened,” the investigators said. According to the police, the 40-year-old was lawfully in possession of the powder.
