Increasing problems with the language of the class: migration-above all caused by the Ukraine war-the number of children and adolescents who follow a German support class or a German support course due to such difficulties has recently reached a new high.
In particular, according to the latest available data from the Austria statistics, an extraordinary status of Exact 49,081 children and adolescents in the compulsory school (Volks, Mittel-, Mittel- or Polytechnical School) was tested in the 2023/24 school year. The vast majority were primary school students, namely almost 39,700. This is about a third more than in the introduction 2018/19.
A good 52 percent of the children followed a German financing lesson, the rest of a German promotion course. Only 20 percent of these financing offers were integrative.
More autonomy in financing lessons in schools in the future
The majority took place in individual classes or groups, because the current answer to a parliamentary request from FPö shows by Minister of Education Christoph Return (Neos). This also corresponds to the current requirement: a separate financing class or group must be set up of eight affected students at the location. In the future, however, the school wants to give schools more autonomy.
Ukrainian war is reflected in figures
In the 2022/23 school year there were around 45,700 children in German financing lessons and courses, 2021/22 There were still a good 32,700 and therefore as many as in previous years. According to Statistics Austria, the number of jump was mainly due to immigration, the majority of people from Ukraine. Due to the cut date of the survey on October 1, the refugee movement from Ukraine from the spring of 2022 was only reflected in the 2022/23 school year.
In the first year of the measure there were around 35,300 children in German financing lessons and courses, in 2019/20 it was almost 30,900 and 2020/21 around 31,700.
The government is working on introducing orientation classes
Because children and adolescents have recently increased to the Austrian school system because of the reunification of the family, which grew up in refugee camps and have no experience with educational institutions, the government is currently also working on the introduction of such -driven orientation classes. There, the first knowledge of German and basic skills for school visit must be taught for a maximum of a semester before they come to a regular or German financing lesson. At the same time, parents must also be informed about rules and obligations in society and in school context.
