Due to the large forest fires in Canada, the authorities ordered further evacuations: more than 31,000 people were instructed to get to safety on Wednesday.
The fire brigade is now struggling throughout the country against more than 200 fire, which have already destroyed more than 2.2 million hectares of land – an area that is larger than Israel. So far, more than half of the fire has not been brought under control.
The provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the center of the country are the most affected, where there has been a state of emergency for days. Many people were “very scared,” said Tareq Hosen Alin, who runs a hotel in La Ronge in Saskatchewan. The small town has already been evacuated, but the hotel owner has remained for firefighters and other emergency services.
Fire from the hand
“We are dealing with a monster. The last few hours were chaotic,” said La Ronge’s Fire Brigade on Wednesday. Various active fires burn through the city. One of these fires has already destroyed more than 470,000 hectares of land and is still out of hand.
The air quality suffers en masse
According to the authorities, the fires have already led to a deterioration of air quality in Central Canada and in the north of the United States. Most fires are due to carelessness, for example due to poorly removed campfires. However, the changing climate, which increasingly leads to heat and drought in Canada, is more likely to make devastating forest fires. In 2023, Canada had its worst forest fire season so far. More than 15 million hectares of land burned, eight firefighters died, 230,000 people had to be evacuated.
