The leader of the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) was killed in a US drone strike in Syria on Tuesday, the US Department of Defense said. Maher al-Agal was riding a motorcycle near Jindires at the time of the attack, US Central Command spokesman Dave Eastburn told AFP in Washington. One of al-Agal’s closest associates was seriously injured.
According to the Israeli news agency Belaaz News, the airstrike was carried out in northwestern Syria. The military success means that the attacks planned by the terrorist organization are now being damaged, as the Pentagon has explained.
Politically, the blow to the Islamist group is not inconvenient for the United States – after all, US President Joe Biden is flying to the Middle East for the first time during his term in office. Security issues are once again at the center of his scheduled talks.
