A group of smugglers must have been hungry and thirsty: Customs confiscated a large amount of alcohol, food and an equipped kitchen in a coach from Moldova.
The bus with two drivers and 20 passengers was stopped by a mobile control team from Austrian customs at the Nickelsdorf border crossing. The group was traveling from Chisinau in Moldova to Paris. While the travelers carried smaller amounts of food and alcohol, the drivers’ “provisions” were considerably larger. In the end, the inspection took ten hours!
Almost 300 kilos of meat
The officials found what they were looking for in the passenger compartment and trunk, as well as the driver’s sleeping compartment. 270 kilograms of meat, more than seven kilograms of eggs, 63 kilograms of cheese, eight kilograms of beans, 66 kilograms of grapes and 50 kilograms of apples were seized. There were also 408 liters of various alcoholic beverages, including about 160 liters of Vienna, 36 bottles of sparkling wine, 100 half-liter bottles of cognac and twelve liters of vodka.
An equipped kitchen, four windows, four winter tires and a mattress were also found in the bus. Since the goods have not been declared at the external border of the EU in Romania, the authorities say this is a classic case of smuggling.
Accurate control
“Such control requires a particular degree of precision and concentration from the intervening authorities,” explains Finance Minister Magnus Brunner. In addition to the safety of the employees, there must also be broad knowledge of the exact control process and experience in this area.
The goods were seized and all perishables destroyed. The equipped kitchen and the alcoholic beverages were released after paying a tax increase.
