The EU is “urgently” preparing new sanctions against Russia for “atrocities committed in Bucha”.

Date:

The EU is “urgently” preparing new sanctions against Russia near Kiev, after the “cruelty” committed in Bucha. Images of handcuffed corpses on the ground were leaked this week and circulated by the media around the world. The Ukrainian authorities, the European Union and the United States point to the withdrawal of Russian troops from the city as the reason for the killing of innocent people.

Representatives of the 27 facing the EU are meeting in Brussels this Wednesday and will have the opportunity to impose new sanctions on their table, in addition to guaranteeing that the measures already approved will actually be implemented.

EU High Representative for Co-operation and Security Josep Borrell issued a statement on behalf of the 27 on Monday stating “Russia’s atrocities committed in Bucha and other Ukrainian cities”.

“The horrific images of the deaths and casualties of large numbers of civilians, as well as the destruction of civilian infrastructure, show the true nature of the brutal war of aggression that Russia is waging against Ukraine and its people,” Borrell said. The city of Bucha and other cities in Ukraine will be included in the list of atrocities committed on European soil. The Russian authorities are responsible for this atrocity committed while they were in control of the territory.

Russia, for its part, has spoken of “provocations in Bucha by Ukrainian radicals” and said that “crimes committed by the Kiev regime” in Bucha were designed to “disrupt peace talks and escalate violence.”

The head of European diplomacy confirms that “the perpetrators of war crimes and other serious violations, as well as responsible government officials and military leaders are responsible.” In this regard, “the EU supports all measures to ensure that the Russian armed forces are held accountable for human rights violations in Ukraine and for violating international humanitarian law.”

In particular, the EU “fully supports the investigation launched by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court into war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as the investigation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. “The European Union is cooperating with the Prosecutor General of Ukraine and with civil society in collecting and preserving evidence of war crimes.”

“The EU will continue to strongly support Ukraine and will continue to work urgently on new sanctions against Russia,” Borrell said. “President Putin must end this war immediately and unconditionally.”

International pressure

The international community this week called for a “swift” investigation into alleged “war crimes” committed by Russian forces and to “punish” the perpetrators. EU authorities and members of the governments of the United States, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and other European countries demanded this week that it take place in Bucha, north of Kiev, and in other cities occupied by the army. After Ukraine showed images of civilian corpses lying in the streets and stacked in mass graves.

“The Russian authorities will have to answer for these crimes,” said French President Emmanuel Macron. “The killing of civilians is a war crime,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who announced “coordination with the allies to take new measures against President Putin and his supporters,” and that “Ukraine will receive more weapons.”

The U.S. has gone further and said it has evidence that Russian troops are to blame for the killings of civilians. “We have concluded that Russian forces committed war crimes,” said Ned Price, a State Department spokesman. “I doubt you will see any more pressure soon,” he said when asked if the United States could impose more sanctions on Russia in response to what happened north of Kiev.

Several EU leaders also condemned the events this week. European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the images as “cruel” and said the EU would help with the presentation of evidence. Court.International.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine this week assessed the bodies of 410 civilians who have been removed so far after the withdrawal of Russian troops in the northern suburbs of Kiev. “The bodies of 410 civilians have been killed,” Attorney General Irina Venediktovak was quoted as saying by Ukrinform. “Prosecutors and other specialists have so far investigated 140 of them,” he added, adding that investigators are working with locals to find witnesses, victims and graphic evidence such as photos or videos.
