More than four million Ukrainians have fled abroad since the Russian invasion. The head of the Austrian crisis team in Ukraine, Alexander Bayerl, expects many more refugees to be expected: “If the Russians launch a major offensive, we must be prepared for a new influx of refugees. Even if it has gotten better now, you have to be prepared: the situation could change again very soon,” says Bayerl
Bayerl said there would be mass movements if the Russians invaded the West. “What we are seeing is a sharp increase in bomb attacks,” he said in an interview with “Kleine Zeitung”.
Fewer than 50 Austrians are still in Ukraine
“The people who wanted to leave the country have left. The Austrians who remain today have relatives and are deeply rooted. Or they live in the West, where they feel safe. We are in contact with them and are offering help.”
Staff from the Austrian embassy in Ukraine have been transferred to western Ukraine after the start of the Russian attack and continue to work from Uzhgorod on the Slovakian-Ukrainian border. “There are many displaced persons here, but the large flows of the first weeks have decreased. There are many Ukrainians who want to stay in the country. It is relatively safe here and you can get out quickly if necessary. The city currently has more inhabitants than in times of peace,” said Bayerl.
