Boy (13) unconscious – How Alexander became a lifesaver in the swimming pool

Date:

An editor of “Tiroler Krone” was an eyewitness to a dramatic rescue operation in the Seefeld swimming pool in late summer. Julian (13) suddenly fainted in the water. Fortunately, he is doing well again now. The young Tyrolean, his father and his lifesaver now describe how they experienced the incident.

First of all the good news: Julian (13) is doing well again. After the swimming accident, he spent two days in the Innsbruck clinic, where he was unconscious for several minutes. “I was checked from head to toe. Nothing has been found. “It is a mystery to me how this could have happened,” Julian told “Krone”.

When he was pushed upright in the transport bed from the bathroom after being stabilized, his eyes were open and he appeared awake. “I actually didn’t notice anything. My memory only kicks in much later,” Julian reports.

As a thank you, there was a tour to the Wildspitze
His father Christian Wieser is infinitely grateful to rescuer Alexander Sakotnig. Although they are both from Telfs, they did not know each other until that memorable day in Seefeld. Now they have almost become friends. As a thank you, Wieser organized a spectacular tour to the second highest peak in Austria, the Wildspitze in the Pitztal, for the mountain-loving lifesaver.

“Suddenly I heard loud screaming in the bathroom”
Wieser has already seen a lot through his work, as he is a detective at the city police command in Innsbruck. But when he saw his own boy lying there, he was almost overwhelmed: “When I heard the screams of a bather, I initially did not think that this could have consequences for my son. He is a good swimmer and went down the water slide with a friend. Or so I thought. But when I went to the scene of the accident, I was paralyzed.”

At that moment, Alexander Sakotnig had just pulled the boy out of the water, lifted him over the edge of the pool and stabilized him on the side. “I was playing in the water with my son when I saw someone underwater behind me. At first I didn’t think it was an emergency. Then I felt a touch under the water and looked closer. “I immediately noticed what was happening,” says Sakotnig, describing the anxious minutes.

The lifeguard’s video shows how the accident happened: Julian slides from the edge of the pool into the water and is not visible for more than half a minute. “Drowning happens in silence, this warning from the doctors corresponds to the facts,” says the father. “I’m really glad we weren’t at a lake where the water is cloudier,” says Papa Wieser. Unimaginable…

It is still unclear why Julian became unconscious
The experience also kept the lifesaver busy for days. “I thought about it all the time. Was I fast enough? Did I respond quickly enough?” Julian’s father answers these questions with a clear yes. But what was the reason for the son’s sudden loss of consciousness? He is otherwise in good physical condition, is even a junior ice hockey player for the Silz Bulls and enjoys playing basketball. Further research must reveal this.
