Send e-scooters can be quite dangerous. For children and adolescents, the scooters with Drive are considerably risky and associated with serious injury than those without motor, Viennese trauma surgeons have occupied. In a second study, the road safety researchers from Munich evaluated accidents of e-scooter drivers and cyclists with a similar result.
“Children who drive e-scooters have a high risk of life-threatening traffic accidents,” is the title of a scientific study by the Viennese trauma surgeon (Meduni Vienna/AKH), which was already published online last year and has now been printed in the “Pediatric Research” magazine.
The study included the data of 633 children and adolescents (9.1 plus/min five years), which were included between January 2019 and December 2022 with accident -related injuries. Boys were considerably over -represented with a share of 63.5 percent. 80.1 percent (age eight years plus/min 4.1 years) had used simple scooters. 19.9 percent (14.2 plus/min 4.1 years) had traveled with e-scooters.
Considerably more usual e-scooter accidents
“Ter vergelijking: jeugdige e-scooter-stuurprogramma’s waren aanzienlijk meer betrokken bij verkeersongevallen (niet-elektrische scooters: 16 van de 507 gewonden; e-scooter: 21 van de 126 slachtoffers van het ongeval) en liepen ernstige hoofdletsels op (niet-elektrische scooters: acht van 134 Incurred; e-scooter zeven van 37) dan patiënten die zonder drive zijn,” zei de Trentel-surge van hun Analysis of their analysis.
The conclusion of the authors of the study: “Young e-scooter drivers have a higher risk of being involved in potentially life-threatening traffic accidents than drivers of non-electric scooters. E-scooters have a higher risk of a higher risk of suffering of serious main injuries that require surgical intervention.”
Legislation and law enforcement can also help to prevent such injuries and possibly life-threatening traffic accidents with children and adolescents who manage e-scooters according to the scientists.
Drivers were often alcoholic
A few days ago, the German medical publication “ZM Online” reported very similar data. She reported on a study, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), in which the data from the accident register of the German Society for Trauma Surgery were analyzed.
Since 2020 accidents with e-scooter accidents have been registered in the dream of German society for trauma surgery. This information has now been analyzed by the research group for road safety in the TUM clinic. In his research, the team investigated the data of 538 people who were seriously injured in e-scooter accidents by 2023, and compared the basic data for the course of the accident with the information from injured cyclists and other road users, the online publication said.
The risks of the e-scooters were also shown in this study. In comparison with cyclists, the victims of e-scooter accidents were more male (78.4 percent versus 72.3 percent), younger (44.3 versus 54.5 years) and more often under alcohol influence (34.9 percent versus 15.6 percent).
More than half of the accidents (54 percent) took place at night, 83 percent of the victims of the e-scooter accident suffered serious injury at the head or face. The most common injuries were bleeding on the brain (20.1 percent), skull base breaks (16.7 percent) and several broken ribs (16.5 percent). At least 4.8 percent was mortality.
