On the popular Mallorca Holiday Island, some car leaders will soon be on the collar. Owners of Weekendhuizen and second apartments should no longer have a second car, the question is.
If you have a home in Mallorca, but keep your home abroad, you can only drive one car on the island with one car. This must also be registered with the Spanish Traffic Authority. How many owners of the second house currently have more than one car not known. “We have requested information from the Traffic Authority,” said a spokesperson for the Island Council.
Moreover, the Island Council wants to determine an upper limit of how many vehicles there are in the streets of the island. This should mainly limit the rental cars.
Violations of the planned rules must be punished with 300 to 30,000 euros. In addition, the Island Council can collect the car for four months or to attract permission to drive to Mallorca.
Number of cars must be reduced
With the planned law, the Island Council wants to reduce the number of cars: 400,000 cars with ferries arrived on Mallorca alone in 2023, according to a press release. The design stated that 71 percent of all cars that have reached the island since 2020 are powered by holidaymakers or second homeowners who are not reported in Mallorca.
Llorenç Galmé, the president of the Inselrat, who looks like a German district office, presented the corresponding design of 30 pages of the law on Friday.
Now other parties can present ideas and objections in the chosen plenary meeting of the Island Council before the proposal is then presented to the island parliament that coordinates. The introduction of the rules that many holiday makers can also influence cannot be expected before 2026.
Access for cars
Further measures are also provided. As already on the adjacent islands of Ibiza and Forenta, there will also be an entry for cars in Mallorca. The ferry companies are intended to check whether the amount has not yet been set to the Inselrat has been paid. There are some exceptions to the tax liability, such as residents, second homeowners, trucks or people with disabilities.
