“School is preparing for amo -wages with exercise” – that was the title of the “Krone” in October. The students of high school and HLW in Landwiedstraße in Linz taste the emergency situation. What seems exaggerated at the time has been given tragic topicality through the killing Spree in Graz.
Only an annual fire protection exercise is required for schools, training an amok scenario is voluntary. “We have practiced what is specified by the educational directorate,” says Gym Director Herwig Wingert. So: the classroom blocks – in the Landwiedschule all teachers have carried keys, calmly behaved and switch off all mobile phones not to attract attention. Wingert does not want to go out the exercise – they are done so that the processes are “like fire protection exercises in the mind.” After the premiere of last fall, the exercise must be held once a year.
“There will be no simple solutions”
This means that the educational institution is not alone: ”I know different schools that take such things very, very seriously and in which you prepare for emergency situations. For example: how do I evacuate a school as quickly as possible or how did I have a classroom barricaded?” Says Paul Kimberger. For the top representative of the compulsory school teachers in Upper Austria, the support of the children and adolescents is the most important in the current mourning phase.
But: “It will be necessary to think of certain structural and technical things. There are, for example, access doors that you can seal so that you can come from outside.” Moreover, the Trade Union of the Teacher Trade argues for more school psychologists and social workers. “But I warn of early, populist discussions. Because there will be no simple solution,” said Kimberger.
