A Tyrolean professor was in a wild chase with the police for no reason – manic, drunk and then with drugs in his luggage. It was a traumatic experience for the passenger. The 44-year-old was due to appear in court on Tuesday.
“Get out and lie on the floor!” This is how it must have sounded when the Tyrolean police arrested the 44-year-old and his frightened passenger on the evening of February 25 after a “drive out of hell” over the Innsbrucker, quoted Südring from the van.
In a state of emergency
When you see the Tyrolean, who teaches at a foreign university, in court, you cannot imagine how things could have turned out this way. Even he himself cannot explain his actions: “This is very atypical behavior for me. I really never thought I’d ever be in a situation like this in my life,” he says.
He was in the “peak of a manic phase” at the time, and he also smoked weed and drank a little alcohol – including tasting whiskey with his acquaintance and a friend. “You shouldn’t drive a car like that”, he is now well aware. Today, however, he also takes medication and regularly goes to therapy. Just a few days after the chase, he was admitted to the closed psychiatric ward for three weeks.
Hell Ride, Like in the Movies”
At about 100 km/h he raced through red traffic lights, straight towards oncoming traffic, pedestrians had to jump sideways: “It was a hellish ride. Like in a movie,” the 43-year-old passenger says, trembling. She has never seen her boyfriend like this – he sinks into the armchair in shame during her testimony.
From the Freiburg Bridge over the Innrain to an inn on Brennerstrae, the police followed the van with its flashing lights and sirens. “Because of the excessive speed, I assumed that the trip was preceded by a robbery or a crime,” one of the officers recalled.
Had a gun to his head
When the car stopped, police surrounded him and asked the occupants to get out and lie down. “The next thing I know I was on the floor and the gun was to my head,” the innocent passenger describes the dramatic experience. When officers searched the vehicle, they also found some marijuana.
Final verdict at the bottom of the series of penalties: 11,600 euros fine, semi-conditional.
