Austria was hit by a huge storm front on Sunday. Total rains, violent storms and lightning strokes demanded countless operations from the emergency services throughout the country – and unfortunately also human life …
It was especially difficult on Sunday evening Upper Austria. There the heat of the day was unloaded in a real storm chaos. The Salzkammergut was mainly hit, where 60 liters of rain per square meter in AU-see fell fast.
A Mure went on the Kienbergwand State Road near the Mondsee (see photos below) – Fortunately there was no vehicle on the street at the moment. The fire brigade was constantly in national use: the Florianis in Upper Austria had to use about 150 times in one night.
Flood alarm in the Mühlviertel
Flooded basement, dilated streets, fallen trees and blocked traffic routes provided chaos. The situation in the Mühlviertel was particularly dramatic, where the Schweinbach Fire Brigade was closed within a few hours 35 missions. Entire streets were under water, cellars were flooded, mud was insisted in living rooms. The level of the Gusen rose so fast that flood alarm was activated shortly before midnight.

But not only material damage, but also human life demanded the storms. In Tyrol there was an incredible tragedy on Sunday afternoon: three walkers – a few (both 60 years old) and the brother of the woman (62) – were fatally hit by a lightning strike when they dropped from the lunchhead in the flash area. Despite immediately initiated search, the mountain climbers could only be restored to death. The emergency helicopter was difficult to get on the scene of the accident because of the bad weather.
In the case of storms, the tent collapses
In Gaißau (Vorarlberg) a Fire Brigade festival was surprised by a sudden storm. The tent tore down a violent gust of wind – six people were injured, four of them had to be taken to the hospital. Mayor Stefan Gönwört spoke on Facebook about “A Miracle” who no longer happened. The collapsing tent also damaged various vehicles and two wheelers.

Trees also fell around Feldkirch and Rankweil and blocked railway lines – in Rankweil the train traffic between Lindau and Bludenz had to be temporarily stopped.
Mours and flooded basement
In Carinthian Gnesau, streets changed in furious streams. So much rain fell within 50 minutes that different cellars flooded and TurraCher Straße had to be closed. Three fire brigades were constantly used with a total of 60 emergency services. In the Kircherbach district, a big mure went into the forest – luckily nobody was injured. The water rescue also had to save a surfer from a dangerous storm and raw hint on Lake Ossiacher.
Thunderstorms and hail on Monday
But Monday was also cloudy, cool and wet. Thunderstorms are still to be expected, especially at the North Side Alpine. In the south of Austria the weather remains unstable. In addition, according to the Austrian storm center, thunderstorms and hail in Upper Austria, Styria and Carinthia are also threatened.
A weather improvement and a Sun-Cloud mix can only be expected from Tuesday. The temperatures are more steamed at 18 to 27 degrees – Monday is the coldest day of the week.
