The newest climate report entails alarming figures: the temperature gain in Austria is considerably more pronounced than in the global cut. Austria has been heated by around 3.1 degrees since 1900. The effects on land, people and the environment are huge. There is an urgent need for action.
“Especially since the 1980s, global warming has increasingly been strengthened at around 0.5 degrees per decade. In recent decades, the number of hot days in Austria has tripled in very hot years.
Without countermeasures there is a risk of further fast heating
The current global trend continues, an average worldwide temperature rise of approximately 2.7 degrees can be expected at 2100. For Austria, this is expected to increase the temperature of the middle air with considerably more than 4 degrees compared to pre -industrial times. In such a scenario, very hot years, which used to appear for a decade, would almost be used in the future. Urban areas in particular are influenced by these changes.
Austria is one of the particularly affected regions
The effects of the temperature reinforcement are already alarming. For example, the availability of water is already decreasing in different regions, especially in the east and southeast. Earlier snow melted and falling amounts of snow also make the situation, especially in agricultural areas. Austria is therefore one of the particularly affected regions of Europe.
Extremes already cause average damage of 2 billion euros per year in Austria. These can increase by 2030 to 2.5 to 5.2 billion euros per year. Numerous social and economic areas come under pressure. These include heat -related mortality, harvest losses due to drought, damage caused by flooding and heavy rainfall and a lack of water.
Minister of Environment and Climate Norbert Tettschnig sees the new climate report as an “order to act”, because “climate change has been achieving for a long time- and influences our lives”. However, the fact that the government of ÖVP-Spö-Neos also determines the savings with climate protection causes violent criticism. Colding predecessor Leonore Gewessler from the Greens sees “Alarm level red in Austria”. “Our country has warmed up more than twice as much as the global average. The climate demolition of the government is a disaster in view of this balance of science.”
The government is under pressure
“However, the most important message of the report is not too late. Every tenth degree counts,” says Gewessler. “The report clearly shows that Austria should establish additional measures for climate protection. However, the opposite happened in the first 100 days of the government.” Organizations for environmental and climate protection also require the rapid implementation of effective climate protection measures.
With the report, science shows numerous effective solutions in addition to the rapidly increasing problems. “Consistent climate protection measures are indispensable for Austria. That is why politics must finally listen to the voices of science and act immediately,” says WWF climate expert Karl Schellmann. In particular, the WWF calls for an offensive of nature preservation, extensive energy -saving measures and the reduction of environmentally friendly harmful subsidies.
