An older Italian was lost on Tuesday by car on the Spanish staircase in Rome. The 80-year-old had a decent piece on the monument before he was stopped by the police.
The man was caught early in the morning by some police officers who patroled on the square in front of the Spanish stairs. They called the fire brigade, which removed the vehicle from the steps. The intact driver was negatively tested for alcohol, as Media reported on Tuesday.
The stairs of the architect Francesco de Sanctis from the 18th century is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Cars have driven up the stairs several times. It has long been discussed how it should be better protected – a street leads beyond the upper part that is not closed to traffic.
A Saudi Arabian engineer had been shown three years ago because he had driven the Spanish staircase with a Maserati and damaged it. The 37-year-old, who rented the luxury car, was identified because of the recordings of video monitoring systems. He was accused of having focused the Maserati on the church of Trinità dei Monti over the stairs at night. At least three phases were damaged. The engineer claimed that he followed his GPS and accidentally came to the Spanish stairs.
