“We’ve actually led a beautiful life,” said the suspect, who stabbed his wife to death at the beginning of this year, on Wednesday. “One of the unfortunately many relationships we have had in Austria,” prosecutor Julia Koffler-Pock accused in the Vienna court.
A 52-year-old Afghan man attacked his wife with a knife during an argument in January. He stabbed her repeatedly in the chest and neck. Even when the victim was able to drag himself out of the apartment, he wouldn’t let go. He would have stuck her in the stairwell. The man only stopped when a neighbor came to help.

“Only fortunate circumstances and a speedy rescue chain prevented death,” the prosecutor explains the charge of attempted murder. “I hurt her, but I didn’t want to kill her,” said the Afghan after extensive apologies to judges, jury and public. When his wife allegedly assaulted him verbally in an argument, it came to a “shortcut”.
According to the prosecutor, the act was not unexpected: the Afghan was repeatedly investigated for violent crimes – all against his own family. Sentence: 18 years in prison. The penalty was too lenient for Julia Koffler-Pock. She immediately appealed. The verdict is therefore not final.
