A 65-year-old Viennese died on Wednesday evening while swimming in the Nieuwe Danube. The man wanted to cross a side arm of the Danube, but never reached the other bank.
As the Vienna Professional Fire Brigade confirmed, the swimmer was reported as missing by family members shortly before 6 p.m. The emergency services immediately left and the man could find lifeless in the water shortly later.
The rescue workers pulled the 65-year-old from the new Danube and immediately started resuscitation measures. However, these did not remain successful – only the death of the man could be determined.
The accident occurred just a few days before the 66th anniversary of the Viennese in the popular leisure area in the new Danube.
