Exactly 3022 asylum seekers are currently in basic care in Upper Austria. There are also around 2300 displaced persons from Ukraine. A low – early 2024 there were more than 12,000 people together.
The development in Upper Austria is part of the national trend: if 9173 asylum applications were made everywhere in Austria in the first quarter of 2024, the same period this year was only 6,056. This is also noticeable in basic care: at the beginning of 2024, 4611 asylum seekers were provided in Upper Austria, currently 3022. Including the people moved from Ukraine, the number up to 5318 – see the graphic below.
The largest group of asylum seekers who currently live in Upper Austria are 1268 Syrians. This is followed by people from Turkey (590) and from Afghanistan (311).
“Asylum Act may not be abused”
The status of integration of the upper Austria Christian Dörfel (ÖVP) attributes the falling figures to the “consistent asylum course of the federal government” – not surprising, a party friend Dörfels is in the federal conducl to. The State Council of Integration continues: “We are committed to helping people who need our protection against prosecution. However, asylum legislation may not be misused due to non -regulated immigration of those who have no competition base at all.”
Quarters taken out of use
Development in basic care already influenced the accommodation of refugees. In January, the Federal Employment Agency for Care and Support Services mentioned eight quarters in Upper Austria, but only two of them were in operation. The reason for the low capacity was the low arrival figures for asylum seekers.
