A fireball in the nocturnal starry sky is currently causing a sensation in Lower Austria. Now the fragments of the falling meteor are being sought. The Natural History Museum Vienna asks the population for help.
After a clear fireball on the lower Austrian sky was observed on June 12, the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHM) is now looking for traces. Around 8:30 pm the crush of meteorite near the West Autobahn between St. Pölten and milk went down.
Radiant spectacle
Cameras of the European Fire Ball Network had conquered the radiant spectacle in the atmosphere. Researchers have calculated an “impact area” based on these recordings. Search now for fragments of the falling heavenly body wanted. The support of the population was hoped for this. The excerpts between the cities of Inning and Haindorf are suspected.
With the help of the population
The NHM now requires support from the population: rocks are sought with a characteristic black crust on the surface. “The interior of the rock stands out considerably from the dark outer scale. Such pieces are often relatively difficult for its size – especially when it comes to an iron meteorite,” explains Andrea Patzer, curator of the NHM Meteorite collection.
Document Rock -chunks
In the case of a find, photos must first be taken of different directions. “The best way to document the site with GPS coordinates on the mobile phone.
If possible, the fragment can be lifted with an aluminum foil or a plastic bag. The photos and information can be sent by e -mail to Andrea.patzer@nhm.at.
