Safe supply – medicine bus Pflastara: a doctor on four wheels

Date:

The St. Pöltner project is looking for imitators across the country: a medicine bus will provide basic care in the future. The rolling practice is on the road every Friday in the state capital to give people low-threshold access to medical care.

It only takes something unforeseen to happen in life and you are suddenly without insurance cover: Whether after a divorce, if you miss the registration deadlines, but also with the homeless or migrants. A lack of health insurance, the need to make appointments, long waiting times, embarrassment, language barriers – these and other hurdles make it difficult for people in a wide variety of life situations to get the medical care they need.

Unique project starts
“Instead of leaving these people to fend for themselves, a unique project has now been launched in St. Pölten at the initiative of the Lions Club together with the Emmaus community,” says county councilor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig. In the future, the Pflalastara medicine bus will not only enable low-threshold access to medical care every Friday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the women’s home or the day center on Kalvarienberg – for example for wound treatment, medication and medical consultations – but also for patients with snack packages , warm clothing and support towards crisis intervention.

“There are many hurdles, which is why a medicine bus is needed,” says Emmaus director Karl Langer. The mobile offer scores above all with its anonymity and freeness.
