Sad accident record – weekend snow chaos claimed two lives

Date:

Icy roads and huge amounts of fresh snow caused chaos on Austrian roads this weekend. In several federal states, winter driving conditions led to numerous traffic accidents. A 28-year-old died tragically on Sunday after a head-on crash in Vorarlberg. An Upper Austrian was also killed in an accident.

Snow, sleet, ice: it has been snowing heavily in Austria since Saturday morning. In the traffic accident in the Großer Walsertal in Vorarlberg, the 28-year-old’s car was torn into two parts in the collision and the driver died at the scene of the accident.

A tragedy also took place in Mattighofen in Upper Austria on Sunday night. While crossing a bridge, a couple’s vehicle skidded. The car left the road on a right-hand bend, fell over an embankment and ended up upside down in the Kühbach with the tires up. The man was just able to get out of the car, which fell upside down, while the woman and a dog remained in the car and died.

Several accidents in Styria
In Styria, a 55-year-old driver in Anger near Weiz was lucky on Sunday. She lost control on the snowy Weizer Straße (B 72), hit the vehicle on an embankment and overturned. The woman survived the accident and was injured and taken to hospital. Also in Thal, Styria, a car hit the slippery road and got stuck on a rock settlement. Fortunately, the driver was not injured.

Similar scenarios also played out in Lower Austria. A vehicle was also overturned in the Vienna Woods. For example, in the federal capital there was a traffic accident due to heavy snowfall. A bus crashed into a tree, trapping the driver in his completely destroyed driver’s compartment and having to be freed by the emergency services.

The car fell over a stone wall
A driver from Styria slid his car backwards up the mountain on the sometimes very slippery roads. The vehicle became stuck just before falling over a stone wall. The driver was able to get out of the car in time on the passenger side.

It remains winter
Monday will be a bit quieter. In the coming days, however, it will remain cold in winter, with a maximum of 6 degrees. Heavy snowfall and rain can also occur again and again through Friday.
