In Mooskirchen, in western Styria, a hay baler burned out completely on Wednesday afternoon. A farmer (36) reacted quickly and managed to uncouple his tractor in time to prevent even greater damage. Western Styria remained unscathed.
A 36-year-old farmer was in Mooskirchen (Deutschlandsberg district) with his tractor and attached hay baler on Wednesday afternoon when he suddenly noticed smoke rising from the machine.
When the Steiermarker opened the tailgates of the machine, the flames already hit him. The farmer drove the trailer into a meadow and uncoupled the round baler.
The Mooskirchen and Pirkhof fire brigades, who had arrived in the meantime, were able to extinguish the fire, but the machine had already burned down completely.
The investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that the hay residues in the machine caught fire as a result of an overheated shaft. The material damage amounts to several tens of thousands of euros.
