The declining level of the Danube is facing problems for cruise tourism with hotel ships: On the free-flowing section of the Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen in Bavaria, hotel ships will soon no longer be able to pass easily if the levels continue to fall, explains Hans Kerber of the Danube MDK Waterways and Shipping Office.
Due to the current weather conditions, no rain is expected. The levels would continue to fall. Kerber has released everything for the time being, but the low water level of 2018, which led to major disruptions in shipping, is still a long way off.
River cruise ships with a large draft would still have start-up problems. If the levels continue to fall, the situation will also deteriorate for smaller hotel ships. On the other hand, no impairments are currently expected for normal tour boats.
Cargo ships can regulate draft based on the amount of cargo
In principle, most cargo ships should also be able to sail if the drought continues, explains Kerber. “With cargo ships, the weight of the cargo can be used to control the draft of the ship.” If less cargo is transported, the water level also plays a less important role. However, this naturally reduces the profitability of the ships. “The question is whether you will still drive because of a few tons.”
But hotel ship owners also have alternatives: “A part of the route that is not navigable can be bridged with buses. The passengers then continue their journey on a second ship that is already waiting,” says Kerber.
Ultimately, the decision is made by the shipping companies and the skipper. The Waterways and Shipping Department does not issue prohibitions.
