American racehorse tests positive for crystal meth

Date:

Curious case of horse doping: In the US state of Iowa, a racehorse tested positive for the synthetic drug crystal meth at the end of May. All of Drag Malibu’s wins were subsequently revoked, fined, and banned for 14 days. But neither owners nor trainers want to have been administered the performance-enhancing but extremely dangerous drug.

An investigation by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, a gambling and horse racing regulator, eventually found the goalkeeper to be to blame. However, it was not an intentional administration of the methamphetamine, but an accident. The employee had consumed crystal meth and apparently had residue on his fingers. When putting on the halter, the horse may have received some of the medicine.

The case has only recently become known. In addition to losing his title, he was fined $1,000 and a 14-day suspension. Deliberate doping would not have been so uncommon either. Racehorses in the US have been caught with crystal meth in their blood for years. In many cases, however, these are conscious efforts to improve performance.
