Drama in the Mediterranean – Coast Guard shot down “lost” jet ski vacationers

Date:

A deadly incident occurred on the maritime border between Morocco and Algeria. According to Moroccan media reports, two jet ski drivers were shot dead and another was arrested by the Algerian coast guard. It is said to have been vacationers who “lost their way”.

Two men, who had both French and Moroccan passports, came under fire after taking a wrong turn outside the northern Moroccan tourist town of Saïdia on the Algerian border. A third French-Moroccan tourist has been arrested by the Algerian coastguard, news website Le360 reports on Thursday based on a witness.

“We were lost,” Moroccan website Al Omk quoted the brother of one of the victims as saying. Accordingly, he and his companions ran out of fuel. “We knew we were in Algeria because a black Algerian dinghy was coming towards us” and the people on board were “shooting at us,” he said. The brother, who was in shock, was arrested by the Moroccan navy after the incident and taken back to the port of Saïdia. According to the spokesperson for the Moroccan government, the judiciary is now dealing with the attack. The Algerian side did not comment on this.

Border conflicts and strained relations
Relations between Algeria and Morocco have been tense for decades. One of the issues at stake is the status of Western Sahara. While Morocco considers oil-rich Western Sahara to be part of its national territory, the Polisario Front, which is active in Western Sahara, is campaigning for independence with the support of Algeria. The border between the two North African countries has been closed since 1994.
