At least twelve Turkish soldiers were killed in the weekend in northern Iraq. According to the Ministry of Defense in Ankara, the soldiers were exposed to a large number of methaneas in a cave.
A total of 19 comrades were involved in an assignment in a former ‘hospital’ of the forbidden Employee Koerdistan (PKK). They wanted to restore the remains of a soldier who was killed during a soil operation against the PKK in 2022 in the Kandil Mountains.
Erdogan: “Great sorrow”
How the fatal incident came about is still unclear. Methaneas is not toxic in itself. But in high doses this can lead to a lack of oxygen and suffocation. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced his “great sorrow” and participation for the family members of De Killen on Monday.
The PKK announced its resolution in May. It followed a call to her founder, the Abdullah Öcalan, who was held in Turkey. There are currently negotiations between Turkish and Kurdish representatives about the disarmament of the PKK.
