The reprisals in Russia are now so bad that the independent Russian election observer organization Golos has to hire the work.
The movement to protect the voter rights “Golos” (voice) is considered the most renowned institute for the observation of elections in Russia – it has discovered and documented countless violations. However, the pressure by the court judgment against their co-chairman became too great. “This is the end of a story that the investigation and the court have said for 25 years,” said the NGO on Tuesday.
The internationally known election expert Grigori Melkonjanz was sentenced to five years in May. The court found him guilty of the formation of an unwanted organization. Melkonjanz was accused of cooperation at the European election object Network European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO). Enemo is on the ban in Russia.
Golos: no longer possible work
In the opinion that the defense was sent, the Golos right bank was practically the same as the Enemo organization, Golos said. The court’s decision therefore leaves no choice, because they not only express the risk of law enforcement, not only all members of Golos, but also the people who only advised advice and legal assistance.
Golos has never considered the victory of this or party as his task, it was said in the message. “Because election observation is not a political activity, but a kind of protection of the constitutional order in Russia and a civil rights that are guaranteed by the state.” This work is no longer possible in connection with the court who is a decision against co-chairman Melkonjanz.
